Hello lovely subscribers
Here we are in June, the beginning of summer here in the UK (it actually feels like it today!) and I am taking a pause whilst gradually dipping my toe into the new season.
I wanted to send an update about the change in format and increase in frequency of my newsletter (especially after such a long hiatus!). In an ideal world I would have sent this update earlier but I also knew that if I waited to get everything perfectly in place, it would possibly never happen (I am a Virgo after all!).
A few things:
thethreadjournal.com still exists and have plans for it in the future though its shape and form may change. All posts up until very recently are there for reading but for the time being I am going to post my thoughts/ideas/interviews here on Substack so I am essentially migrating the ‘journal’ part here.
I have moved my email list (including you!) from Mailchimp to Substack. If you are not familiar, Substack is a platform for posts/newsletters that values writers and celebrates creativity and community. I have found it to be a very welcoming place so far, in terms of the software and the team, but also as a supportive community of people writing on a range of subjects from personal stories and niche interests to high-profile global topics (it’s definitely worth exploring). You can choose to read my posts as an email direct to your inbox or via the Substack app as a blog post.
Since my last regular website post in 2020 (!), it is safe to say that the outer world and my small part in it, has changed dramatically, so naturally there is a shift in what I am thinking and writing about, more on this soon…
.
Home has become more than a place I return to, and is instead where everything starts from — it is the foundation of my days mothering and of family life. Sacredness in terms of my space looks and feels very different in this chapter; it exists in the pauses and tiny pockets of time, whilst the chaos of a three and a one-year old rightfully reigns!
.
We are now in our ‘forever’ home that needs a lot of work, but not completely gutting. It is slow, thoughtful and mindful work filling our home with snippets and stories of our lives that we hope will grow with us. It is probably too slow and fragmented to be called a renovation but I plan to document the incremental changes we make.
Since the first lockdown in March 2020 which coincided with the hazy days of having a new baby, I have found that simply noticing the season playing out around us, to be an anchor and way to orient myself. The feel of the air and the way the light falls has become a compass during the last few years which have felt simultaneously wild and quotidien; intricately detailed and a passing blur; hugely demanding and achingly tender.
.
So mostly everything I write will be hinged on the season in some way, through my lens of mothering and creativity (whilst I explore how the two can co-exist), with a home and a garden at the heart.
.
I hope you will join me whilst I am figuring it all out…
I think I have told you everything for now but let me know if you have any questions or just want to say hello! I would love to hear from you, whether you have time to reply to an email or post something in the comments along the way.
In the meantime, let summer begin! What are you most looking forward to this season?
Lx
