Gorgeous interview, you’ve created such a welcoming vibe, I absolutely love it. And there is nothing nicer than having your own space to work in - like Claire I share my home working with my other half, and carving out space for me was essential. Sometimes though we still share the dining table and chitchat - depending on the work! For writing I must be alone!
Thank you for your kind words Sarah. Yes I agree, there is something special about a place reserved with the intention for creative work. I also totally get that in reality, we also need to work alongside life (and it is nice to have the company sometimes!) but YES to writing alone! xx
I adored this interview. After reading I was reminded that I too would love to move away from my living room desk into a space of my own. Dreaming up a vintage desk, an industrial looking lamp, forest outside my window. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much for reading, I’m delighted to hear that it sparked a renewed intention to create your own space. Absolutely in love with your dream atelier. I feel we need a collective moodboard on this subject...! xx
Thank you so much Claire, so loved having you and your insights. Still dreaming of the views from your cottage and also your vision, inc. the mountainscape and crèche! Love to you xx
This sounds like the perfect combination of spaces Sarah! I totally know what you mean re: intuitively choosing the space depending on the day/work to do and how you feel xx
Loved this, Lyndsey. For the first time, I will have a dedicated design studio at home, and I am soooo excited. It has a large sash window and looks out to the soon to be garden. I have worked out of a shed or at the dining room table up until this point, much to my husband's annoyance. Fabric, trim, paint and tile samples scattered everywhere. Love the work Claire creates x
Thank you for reading Lisa. Wow, so exciting to be creating your own design studio at home. The light will be amazing in there and how beautiful to look out onto the garden. Ha yes I totally know what you mean re: creating within the glorious mess of everyday life! Your own space will be a haven and I am sure will be inspiring in itself. Yes so good to have Claire's insights into where she creates her brilliant work xx
What an absolutely phenomenal idea for a series, and beautiful writing from Claire. I don’t have a dedicated space since our 3rd came along, and I miss it. We’re going to try and shove a desk in the music room, which isn’t the long-term ideal but will do! Long-term somewhere warm with a window looking out to trees and greenery, full of light but cosy with fairy lights and access to excellent coffee and water! Ps if you’re looking for guests (waves 👋) xx
Oh I am sorry that you miss the space you used to have. Do you spend a lot of time in your music room? It definitely sounds like a good idea to move a desk in there even if just for now. I love the long term vision! Sounds perfect and yes always coffee (and water)! And yes please, would love your insights for this series xx
I love the sound of the space that you want to create at home Lyndsay, and the view from that room with the wisteria, just stunning 😍. Asking other creative about their space to inspire your own - such a great idea. Inspiring to read how Claire works around her family and makes time for her creativity too - also the sound of floor to ceiling windows and a mountainscape view for Claire's dream creative space, beautiful! I definitely create amongst the chaos atm, I've got no designated space yet so working on my phone while the kids are around me, or writing next to my son while he naps is how it looks atm. Though I like to listen to a playlist that kind of takes me away mentally while I'm creating.
Ah thank you Jenna, a very slow-evolving vision but we will get there one day. Yes the wisteria has been such a wonderful surprise, we viewed the house in the depths of a dark January and I had no idea!
I agree that the unfolding of Claire’s creative work around the needs of her family is so inspiring.
I absolutely relate to creating in the chaos you speak of. I am replying to you in the dark as I hold my toddler after his first wake of the night!
It always amazes me how you and others here put together such beautiful and thoughtful work in the midst of mothering which is so entirely all-consuming xx
Loved this, Lyndsay! Perfect Friday evening reading for me after a week that has been EXTRA. So lovely to read about Claire's working rhythm and I can imagine her moving from space to space as the hours tick by and the tasks change.
The creation of calm working spaces where meaningful work and joyful interactions can take place is so important. I'm excited for you with the possibility of a new space on the horizon, too.
I got my office set up in the summer and it has been an absolute dream. It's in an annex to our house in a room that at one point would have been the cold store before it was eventually enveloped into the house.
When we bought the house, the elderly man who lived here explained he'd used the room to build his model aeroplanes, so we christened it 'The Workshop' and let it on Airbnb. When COVID hit, that all changed and then followed a few years where we had no choice but to use it to store our combined 'dead dad stuff' (hope that's not too crass!) it's taken until now to reclaim it as ours, but it's been worth it!
Thank you for reading Lindsay, I'm glad it reached you at a good time after your full on week.
Yes! I felt the same, Claire's flow and movement during the day feels so natural and intuitive!
Thank you, I am excited too. After two years in this house, my conscious mind is finally turning towards it, although there has always been a lot of daydreaming about it.
Oh wow 'The Workshop' sounds amazing, I love that it really was a working atelier for the previous owner. I am also so pleased that it has been a dream, especially after being a place holding so many tender layers for you, it can't have been an easy task to reclaim the space and I am so glad it has been worth it. Sending love to you xx
Oh I loved this so much! Such a great idea for a series Lyndsay, I can already tell I'll be obsessed with it. Creating intentional, creative spaces is something I live for although I have noticed since buying and moving into our forever home I have not rushed but let the process marinate slowly. I have a few spaces here that I use and alternate depending on the season I am in (that's the actual seasons, or monthly/daily seasons we all move through)
Also absolutely adored your take on it Claire!! I love getting to know you in this way ✨
Thank you beautiful ladies. And Lyndsay that photo of your balcony ... A DREAM xx
Thank you so much Claudia! I do hope you enjoy it as the series unfolds and evolves. Ah, so lovely to hear that you are drawn to building intentional and creative sacred spaces at home, I am so with you on the slow-mo, it feels as though there is a lot of invisible work feeling into it all. Would love to hear more about the pockets of space you tune into...
It was so inspiring to have Claire's insights, the use of space feels so natural!
Ah thank you, yes I love that balcony spot so much, especially in the spring when wisteria is out xx
I really enjoyed reading this! I'm currently living in many different places whilst our home is repaired for water damage and the idea of capturing some sort of creative ritual or space that I can pack and unpack is very appealing! I feel the same about the moon though - the pull it has doesn't depend on where we are!
Ah wonderful, so glad you enjoyed reading. Interesting that you are currently in that transitional space whilst your home is being repaired, so not easy — an upcoming ATELIER instalment will talk about this very subject of setting intentional space on the move. Yes re the moon, so full tonight, wishing you as restful a night as possible xx
Ah i was really taken into the vision Claire holds - those big glass windows with mountainscape 🤌🏼✨ I can’t wait for more from this series, as I am currently in the process of calling in our next home and more importantly a creative space for me!!
Yes also in love with Claire’s vision, the windows and the view feel important. Thanks so much, I’m so excited to explore other creative spaces and rituals, I am sure there will be lots of inspiration for all of us. Very exciting that you are in the process of calling in your new home and that space for your creativity is a priority part in this dream place xx
Adored this! And I have that same dream vision Claire of a mountainscape from my vision board studio! Love the name of this series, it feels so right and so you! Can’t wait to read more and hear how your own creative space evolves! Xx
Yesss to the mountainscape! Ah thank you L, the name popped into my head and felt right, I love that you think it feels ‘me’. Thank you thank you, excited for the series (and my own space!) to evolve xx
I love the interview! It felt like I was there with her as Claire talks about her life. The photo of the sunrise made me think of our sunrises, and how beautiful they are on ordinary days.
As a new writer on Substack, I’m still trying to figure out where to record audio. It’ll probably be in the car since that’s the only quiet space I seem to have during the day. 🤣 Does anyone else do that?!
So glad you enjoyed reading Sandra. And yes to the sunrise, there is something so hopeful about each sunrise, even on ordinary days as you say.
Welcome to Substack! Exciting that you are planning to record audio, I haven't quite got my head around it yet. I believe Claire did a masterclass on audio yesterday and Laura Oldfield has introduced a beautiful sound circle with audio-related tasks that would be worth checking out! xx

Hmmm for sure! I get so mad if I’m writing and someone talks to me... mind you, I get mad if I need to pee when I’m writing, to be honest. TMI?? xx
Haha not TMI, a necessary but infuriating inconvenience when writing! xx
I adored this interview. After reading I was reminded that I too would love to move away from my living room desk into a space of my own. Dreaming up a vintage desk, an industrial looking lamp, forest outside my window. Thanks for sharing!
Sounds magical!! I love seeing glimpses of creative studios... even if it is still a pipe dream!
Thanks so much for reading, I’m delighted to hear that it sparked a renewed intention to create your own space. Absolutely in love with your dream atelier. I feel we need a collective moodboard on this subject...! xx
Atelier! What a gorgeous idea for a series! And featuring the lovely Claire too ✨
Ah thank you Sarah, glad you like it and yes I am so delighted to have Claire's beautiful insights and the gorgeous views! xx
What a beautiful edit - I see even more in the way you’ve framed this up! Can’t wait to read more from others. Much love and so much gratitude! ✨✍️🙌🏻
Thank you so much Claire, so loved having you and your insights. Still dreaming of the views from your cottage and also your vision, inc. the mountainscape and crèche! Love to you xx
I have a dedicated studio space but also create from my dining table, the sofa or my bedroom. It really depends on my energy and the task at hand 💫
This sounds like the perfect combination of spaces Sarah! I totally know what you mean re: intuitively choosing the space depending on the day/work to do and how you feel xx

I am so excited Ellen. X

Yes we’ve moved my great aunt’s desk in there and it’s feeling like it’s going to work! And YAY! I’m hello@lauraoldfield.com x x x

Lovely interview with Claire! 💛✨
My writing space is just my sofa with my cat endlessly trying to climb onto my laptop 😹
Thank you for reading Mackenzie. Haha I can imagine the unexpected additions your cat makes to your work with paws on keys! So sweet 🐈⬛
